Do your kids know you write about them?
Yes. I don’t publish anything related to them which they haven’t read and OK’d. You should hear the stuff I don’t write about.
Do you take custom orders?
Absolutely! Tell me what you’re thinking, and we’ll work on a design together.
Will you make something for me in gold-plated?
Why would you want to hurt me like that? No, no, no. Affordable jewelry is wonderful, but cheap jewelry hurts us all. I can’t even look at you, right now. I can’t believe you even asked me that.
Can you melt down and use my gold for a custom piece?
Definitely! If your gold is 14k or higher, we can do that. It’s a great way to get a unique, new piece in an affordable way. Contact me through my sales site (www.vakadesign.com) for pricing information. Don’t be scared.
Do you work in different karats of gold?
I work in 14k or higher. My ready-to-purchase pieces are almost always in 14k, as that is the karat most in my area of the world prefer. I really enjoy working in higher higher karats, though, and am always happy for an opportunity to do so.
What about white gold?
Oy. White gold.
The white gold you see in stores is generally finished with a rhodium-plating, and that is what gives it the color and finish people have come to associate with white gold. Used as artisan metal and left unplated, it is not quite the same.
Additionally, the the alloys used to make the gold white also make it exceptionally brittle. Much of the intricate forging and smithing I do cannot be accomplished in white gold.
I could go on and on about the evils of white gold, but your short answer? No, I don’t work in white gold except for the most simple of designs.
Then how about pink gold?
Can you recreate someone else’s design for me?
You can show me images of the types of pieces and look you like, and we’ll design from there. But, if there is a specific artist’s piece you would like recreated? No. I will not take other artists’ designs.
Do you make engagement rings?
Yes. I love doing engagement rings, and have two different options. First, my handmade designs. Second, pieces my vendors carry (think halo rings, vintage style rings, white gold, etc). I’m happy to give diamond quotes anytime.
